One of the most extraordinary shipwreck stories in polar history is coming to Dundee in a whole new form this summer.

From 30 April to November 2026, Discovery Point will host a remarkably detailed 3D model of Endurance, the legendary ship lost during Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition.

Making its Scottish debut in Dundee, the model has been created through a collaboration with the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust and offers visitors the chance to get astonishingly close to the wreck of one of the world’s most famous ships not through paintings or old photographs, but through cutting-edge 3D printing technology that recreates the vessel in striking detail.

And it sounds properly fascinating.

From boots left on deck to artefacts scattered across the sea floor, the model captures details revealed by the discovery of the wreck in the Weddell Sea, helping bring Endurance’s final resting place to life in a way that feels both moving and modern.

For Dundee, it is a particularly fitting homecoming of sorts.

Discovery Point already tells the story of polar exploration through RRS Discovery and its links to Shackleton’s early Antarctic career. Adding Endurance into that story gives visitors an even richer sense of the explorer’s journey from his beginnings aboard Discovery to the extraordinary survival story that would cement his place in history.

To mark the model’s arrival, Discovery Point will also host a special talk by Mensun Bound, the Exploration Director of the Endurance22 Expedition that located the shipwreck.

The Quest to Find the Endurance takes place at 6pm on 30 April, with tickets priced at £15 via Eventbrite. Given the significance of the find and the level of interest Shackleton still inspires that one is likely to move quickly.

For anyone planning a visit to Discovery Point this summer, the exhibition adds another very good reason to go. Alongside the story of Shackleton, RRS Discovery and the wider history of Antarctic exploration, the Endurance model offers something a little different: a chance to see one of history’s most mythic wrecks rendered in meticulous, almost eerie detail.

It is history, technology and human endurance all meeting in one place.

And in Dundee, that feels exactly right.
