Right, listen up, Edinburgh. We know you love a cobble, a castle, and paying £7 for a coffee served with a poem. Respect. Truly. But every now and then even the poshest of folk need a wee change of scenery that doesn’t involve another grey stair up Arthur’s Seat.
So here’s the deal: Dundee’s sitting up the road, quietly getting on with being Scotland’s coolest little city… and now there’s a direct Ember electric coach route that makes a day trip properly painless. No car drama. No “who’s driving?” squabbles. No “let’s just stay in Leith” excuses.
Come up. We’ll take the mick a bit. You’ll pretend you’re not enjoying it. Everybody wins.
Getting here: the easy bit (aye, we said it)
If you’re in Edinburgh, you can hop on an Ember electric coach and glide up to Dundee without the usual faff. It’s the kind of travel that lets you arrive feeling smug, refreshed, and slightly superior which, honestly, will make you feel right at home.
And yes, we know plenty of Dundonians use Edinburgh mostly as “the bit with the airport.” Fair point. But now that you’ve got a clean, direct route north, you can use it for something even better: a proper day out.
For the fancy-pants brigade: culture that’s actually class
Let’s start with the big hitter, because you lot like something you can casually name-drop at brunch:
V&A Dundee
Aye, we’ve got the V&A. Not a wee side-quest museum either this is a proper world-class building right on the waterfront, with exhibitions that’ll have you saying things like “texture” and “form” without irony.
It’s the perfect Edinburgh-to-Dundee conversion experience:
- You arrive for the architecture
- You stay for the exhibitions
- You leave going, “Right… Dundee’s actually… good?”
And don’t worry. If you accidentally buy something tasteful in the gift shop, we’ll not tell anyone.
More culture, less coughing in a silent gallery
If you’ve still got energy after the V&A, Dundee’s got a cracking creative scene galleries, shows, independent spots. It’s not trying to be London. It’s not cosplaying as Paris. It’s just… genuinely good. And a lot less up itself.
Our “urban beach”: yes, it’s a real thing (and yes, it’s brilliant)
Here’s where Dundee really starts winding up Edinburgh in the best way: we’ve got a beach. In the city. An actual big sandy stretch where you can wander, get fresh air, and pretend you’re in a moody indie film.
Head over toward Broughty Ferry and you’ll get:
- beach walks with proper big skies
- cracking views over the Tay
- cafés and wee shops for a civilised potter
- and a castle, because of course we’ve got a castle too
Broughty Castle
It’s small, it’s handsome, it’s perched right by the water like it’s showing off. Go for a wander, take the photos, then go back to Edinburgh and casually drop:
“Aw we were at the castle by the beach.”
Watch your pals’ faces. Magic.
For the “gadges” KEN!: pubs, pints, and a night that gets away from you
Now, Edinburgh… we know you’ve got your wine bars. Your candlelit cocktail dens. Your places where the bartender asks what “notes” you’re looking for and you panic.
Dundee’s got options too but we’ve also got what you might call proper pubs. The kind where:
- the chat’s good
- the pours are honest
- and nobody judges you for ordering a pint like a normal human
There are loads of great spots across the city, with particular chaos (the good kind) around the Perth Road, and plenty of gems tucked throughout the centre.
And the food scene? Genuinely exciting. You can go from laid-back scran to properly posh plates in the space of a few streets. So yes bring your foodie pals. We’ll feed them well, then remind them Dundee invented the humble “that’s actually cracking, ken.”
Boat trips, dolphins, and the bit where you admit Dundee’s a belter
Here’s a sentence you maybe didn’t expect to read today:
You can take a boat trip from Dundee and see dolphins.
Aye. Actual dolphins. Out in the Tay, living their best lives, no interest whatsoever in your Edinburgh festival schedule. Depending on the day you might spot other wildlife too—seals, seabirds, the lot.
It’s one of those experiences that turns a “quick day trip” into:
“Right… when are we coming back?”
A ridiculously good one-day itinerary (so you don’t have to think)
If you want a day that covers the essentials without sprinting about like you’re changing platforms at Waverley, do this:
Morning
- Arrive, head straight to the V&A Dundee
- Coffee with a view of the waterfront (try not to look impressed)
Lunch
- Grab lunch nearby plenty of solid options, from quick-and-tasty to “let’s make this a proper lunch”
Afternoon
- Wander the waterfront, then make your way to Broughty Ferry
- Beach walk + Broughty Castle
- Optional: wee bit of shopping / cake / ice cream (don’t be shy)
Late afternoon / early evening
- If you’re lucky with timings: boat trip / wildlife spotting
- If not: swap it for a pint somewhere with atmosphere
Evening
- Dinner + a couple of drinks
- Ember back to Edinburgh with that satisfied “we did something” glow
The real reason you should come: Dundee’s got heart
Here’s the truth underneath the banter: Dundee’s friendly, creative, and full of surprises. It’s got big-ticket stuff like the V&A, sure but it’s also got a proper local vibe that makes a day out feel easy. No posing. No performance. Just a city that’s quietly (and sometimes loudly) a great time.
So, Edinburgh pals: come up for the day. Bring your scarf collection and your nicest trainers. We’ll take the mick, you’ll take some photos, and by the time you’re heading home you’ll be saying:
“Aye… Dundee’s actually class, ken.”
And we’ll pretend we’re not delighted.
Wee call to action (because somebody’s got to be responsible)
