Dundee’s rich industrial past and the powerful stories of its people take centre stage this summer at a special event marking the launch of BFI Replay in the city’s libraries. Hosted at the Steps Theatre within Dundee Central Library, this free event on Thursday 26 June 2025 (1:00 PM – 2:30 PM) offers a rare opportunity to explore the UK’s screen heritage through the lens of two major institutions: the British Film Institute (BFI) and the National Library of Scotland.

Step Inside the Archive: BFI Replay & the National Library of Scotland

BFI Replay is a free-to-access digital archive available exclusively in UK public libraries. It offers thousands of digitised videos and television programmes from the BFI National Archive and regional film archives, capturing stories of Britain’s people, places, and culture spanning over six decades. Attendees will also enjoy curated highlights from BFI Replay, showcasing the depth and diversity of the archive.

Special Screening: She Town by Stella Rooney

A highlight of the afternoon is the screening of She Town, a short film by Dundee-based artist and filmmaker Stella Rooney. The film delves into the lives of the working-class women who shaped Dundee’s industrial legacy, portraying the city’s rise as a matriarchal powerhouse. She Town was exhibited at The Royal Scottish Academy’s New Contemporaries 2022 and was awarded the first National Library of Scotland purchase prize for moving image.
