🎄Lights, Laughter & a Wee Bit o’ Magic

There’s something special about Dundee at Christmas. The city just feels different — a wee bit brighter, a wee bit friendlier, and a whole lot more sparkly. Maybe it’s the fairy lights strung across Reform Street, maybe it’s the smell of hot churros drifting through the City Square, or maybe it’s just that feeling you get when the whole place seems to take a deep breath and say, “Aye, we’ve made it through another year.”

Whatever it is, Christmas in Dundee 2025 looks set to be a belter.

🎅 The Big Switch-On

The Christmas Light Night is always the big moment — and this year, it’s happening on Sunday, November 16th, with all the usual festive fanfare. Expect live music, street performers, and, of course, that big countdown that somehow makes the whole city feel like one big family for five shining minutes.

Once those lights flicker on and the trees start to glow, you can’t help but grin. Dundee does Christmas lights properly — from the City Square tree to the twinkly trails up the Murraygate, it’s pure magic.

🧤 Markets, Makers & Mugs of Mulled Wine

The Dundee Christmas Market returns to the City Square this year, and it’s a cracker. Stalls packed with local makers selling everything from hand-poured candles to hand-knitted hats (and the occasional “handmade” mince pie that’s clearly shop-bought but we’ll let them off — it’s Christmas).

You can wander around, mug of mulled wine in hand, pretending you’re in a Hallmark film — except with a stronger wind and better banter.

🧑‍🎄 Festive Food & Dundee Cheer

If your idea of Christmas is less “gliding gracefully on ice” and more “eating your bodyweight in stuffing”, Dundee’s food scene will sort you right out.

Expect Christmas menus popping up everywhere — from cosy cafes in Broughty Ferry serving turkey toasties and spiced hot chocolates, to fine dining spots in the city centre rolling out five-course festive feasts. And if you’re really lucky, someone’ll make you a proper Dundee cake — thick, rich, and soaked in enough whisky to keep you warm till Hogmanay.

✨ Hogmanay on the Horizon

As the lights keep twinkling and the last of the Quality Street vanish mysteriously from the tin, Dundee starts to shift towards Hogmanay — and this year’s celebrations promise fireworks over the Tay and music that’ll keep the cold out better than any jumper.

It’s a reminder that, for all its new developments and shiny buildings, Dundee still knows how to come together, celebrate, and make a proper good noise about it.

🎁 So, What Makes Dundee at Christmas So Special?

It’s not just the events, or the lights, or the shopping (though all that’s grand). It’s the feeling — that cosy mix of pride, nostalgia, and togetherness. Dundee’s got heart, and at Christmas, you can see it everywhere.

So, whether you’re a local, a visitor, or someone who just loves a good festive wander — wrap up warm, grab a pal, and get yourself out there. Dundee at Christmas is waiting for you — and trust me, it’s pure magic.

Merry Christmas, Dundee.

May your mince pies be plentiful, your lights bright, and your hearts even brighter.
