Right, Dundee — ready to get your sparkle on? Because the most magical day of the year is nearly here! On Sunday 16 November, the city centre is set to transform into a winter wonderland for the Dundee Christmas Switch-On, and trust me — you’ll not want to miss this one.
From 10am to 7pm, the streets will be bursting with festive fun: think sizzling street food, artisan markets, live music, acrobatics, a 4K Santa Dash, and maybe even a wee bit of mischief from the Grinch himself (behave yourself, big man).
This is Dundee at its best — full of heart, hustle, and just the right amount of tinsel.
Start Your Engines, Santas!
The day kicks off bright and early with the Santa Dash 4K Fun Run at 10:30am. Hundreds of jolly joggers in red suits will take to the streets for a run that’s more about laughter than lap times — all to raise funds for Cash for Kids. It’s the perfect mix of festive fitness and feel-good community spirit.
(And let’s be honest — there’s nothing quite like watching a full-grown Santa trip over a traffic cone to remind you Christmas is a team sport.)
Street Magic & Sky-High Acrobatics
All through the day, Dundee’s streets will come alive with roaming performers, street food stalls, and the festive market in association with The Yard Market. You’ll find local makers, twinkly lights, and more hot chocolate than your heart can handle.
Keep your eyes peeled for the Living Lamp Posts — aye, actual lamp posts that walk, wave, and glow. (If you’re not slightly freaked out, you’re not paying attention.)
And don’t miss the Aerial Arch Acrobatics — a stunning show beneath a 12-metre glowing arch where a fearless performer flips, twists, and flies through the air like it’s nothing. It’s the kind of thing that’ll make you gasp, then immediately wonder how on earth they practise for that.
Watch Out for The Grinch
He’s green, he’s grumpy, and he’s definitely not on Santa’s nice list. The Grinch will be slinking around the city centre, up to his usual tricks — pranks, pouts, and plenty of photo ops. Keep your mince pies close and your Christmas spirit closer.
Tunes, Treats & Tay FM
As the afternoon rolls on, Tay FM’s Gregor & Lynsey will keep the energy high with live music and entertainment from The McAndrews Sisters, Downfield Musical Society, Thomson-Leng Musical Society, Dundee Rep Theatre, and Rock the Halls. It’s a full day of festive talent that’ll have your toes tapping even in your thickest winter boots.
The Big Moment – 6PM
Then, as the sun dips and the anticipation builds, all eyes turn to the Christmas Tree in City Square. At 6pm sharp, the lights will flicker on — snow machines whirling, sparkler cannons firing, and a special appearance from Santa himself.
It’s the moment Dundee officially declares: right, Christmas has arrived.
The night wraps up with live music from Strawberry Bank, keeping the vibes warm and the spirits high till 7pm.
