Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk Exhibition Opens at V&A Dundee

V&A Dundee proudly unveils Europe’s first significant exhibition dedicated to the kimono, entitled “Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk.” This ground-breaking exhibition opened its doors on Saturday, 4 May 2024, offering an expansive journey through the evolution of the kimono from its 17th-century origins in Japan to its role in today’s global fashion and street style scenes.

A Journey Through Time and Fashion

The exhibition masterfully portrays the kimono not just as a traditional Japanese garment but as a continuously evolving icon of fashion. It features an exquisite array of over 300 items, including rare 17th and 18th-century kimonos, contemporary pieces by fashion legends like Issey Miyake and Alexander McQueen, and modern streetwear from Japan. Visitors can explore how the kimono has influenced myriad aspects of modern fashion and popular culture, extending even to rock stars and film costumes like those seen in Star Wars.

Highlights and Unique Pieces

Among the exhibition’s highlights are a kimono crafted by Kunihiko Moriguchi, a designated Living National Treasure, and items from L’Wren Scott’s 2014 collection. A particularly poignant piece is a kimono once owned by Freddie Mercury, which he wore at home, emphasising the personal connections that can be woven through garments.

Cultural Fusion and Fashion Evolution

“Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk” is divided into three thematic sections, each delving into different historical and cultural contexts:

  1. Kimono in Japan: This section highlights the vibrant fashion culture of Edo-period Japan, where kimonos were a canvas for expressing individuality and social status.
  2. Kimono in the World: It reflects on the kimono craze in the late 19th century, showing how the garment influenced and was influenced by global fashion trends.
  3. Kimono Transformed: The final section showcases contemporary designs that reinterpret traditional elements for modern audiences.

Engaging Activities and Local Impact

The exhibition’s timing aligns with a series of cultural events at V&A Dundee, including curator talks, family workshops inspired by Japanese pop culture, and a Japanese-themed afternoon tea at Tatha Bar & Kitchen, blending traditional flavours with local inspirations.
