The Power of Language Using Language with Care
This transformative all-day gathering delves into the essential role that language plays in every form of communication. The way we express ourselves profoundly shapes our engagements across diverse fields and situations. Welcoming participants from all professions, this workshop incorporates real-life scenarios from areas such as social work, residential care, educational institutions, foster care, mental health support, and other environments focused on trauma awareness.
We will analyze the language employed in dialogues, therapeutic practices, documentation, discussions, and outreach content. The session will encourage introspection on the terminology we use to refer to individuals and how our choice of words impacts our prejudices, perspectives, and behaviors. Additionally, we will consider the potential of words to either heal or hurt, to trigger trauma or alleviate it, and how they can shape realities. A single word can have a profound effect, as “every encounter holds the potential to be transformative” (Treisman, 2017).
This workshop will emphasize the use of person-centered language, externalizing approaches, and the value of purposeful communication. Participants will develop a deeper awareness of the influence of language and acquire actionable techniques for communicating with greater thoughtfulness.
This event is closely tied to the goals of The Promise, reflecting the professional duty to thoughtfully evaluate language and intentionally shift narratives to foster a more supportive environment for care-experienced individuals in Scotland.
**Goals and Objectives:**
