The Pando Tree Life on the Boundary of Discovery and Imagination

The Pando Tree holds the title of the largest tree on the planet. Situated in Utah’s Fishlake National Forest, Pando consists of 47,000 genetically identical stems covering 43 hectares, all linked through an extensive underground root system that functions as a unified entity to manage energy, protection, and renewal. Estimated to have thrived for 9,000 to 16,000 years, Pando ranks as the oldest tree in the Americas and among the most ancient organisms on the planet. Since 2021, the conservation organization Friends of Pando has collaborated with Fishlake National Forest to raise awareness and undertake efforts to safeguard, observe, and rehabilitate Pando. In this presentation, Lance Oditt, the founder of Friends of Pando, will share insights into this remarkable ancient marvel and the 10,000-year bond between Pando and humanity in the high desert sanctuary it inhabits. The event will begin with a talk by Cumbria-based artists Rob Fraser and Harriet Fraser, creators of the Place Collective, who will recount their 2019 visit to Pando and discuss their upcoming residency with Friends of Pando in 2025.
