The Dead Curious Cafe at Tribe Porty: Death Does Not Catch the Wise Unprepared

Discussions about death and dying are often limited to somber moments, typically in clinical settings, where the topic can no longer be avoided. There is value in making death a more familiar subject, broadening our understanding of what it means to live a fulfilling life. Many shy away from contemplating mortality, which can breed anxiety and unease. Engaging in candid conversations helps to demystify death, reducing its stigma and enabling individuals to face it with greater calm and acceptance.

We invite you to a series of engaging discussions at the Dead Curious Cafe, where we will delve into our perceptions and connections with death. This month, we reflect on the saying, “Death Does Not Catch the Wise Unprepared” by Jean de La Fontaine. This event offers a supportive and caring space where everyone is welcome to contribute, and respect for one another is paramount.

The sessions are led by Loretta Dunn, a Life Celebrant and former nurse with extensive experience supporting grieving families and those nearing the end of life. This is a pay-what-you-can gathering, with a suggested contribution of £5.

About Loretta:
Loretta Dunn serves as a life celebrant and death doula, deeply committed to the concepts of living and dying well. Her background spans a lengthy career in nursing and midwifery, and she is affiliated with The Institute for the Study of Birth, Breath and Death. Additionally, she is an EASE Facilitator (End of Life Aid Skills for Everyone) through the Scottish Partnership for Palliative Care. Loretta is dedicated to bringing death into the open as a way to inspire us to embrace life fully in the present. Her work is grounded in compassion and love.

The evening promises a secure and tranquil setting for participants to share and gain deeper insights into spiritual wellbeing, fostering a meaningful approach to both life and death.

“Love has flourished within my innermost circle of family and friends. By openly discussing life and death, we have strengthened our connections. Death, a universal experience often shrouded in silence, has become a central theme in our talks. Through these dialogues, I’ve learned profound lessons not only about the inevitable end but also about how to truly live.” – Dani Trudeau on the power of discussing mortality

Please note that this is a paid event.
