Tay Bridge Disaster McGonagall Captain Scott and other stories

Highlighting the tragic Tay Bridge Disaster, a significant part of our guided walk and discussion will focus on the dramatic events of that ill-fated day. Along the way, you’ll come across notorious villains, beloved yet terrible poets, and genuine heroes. Another key highlight of the tour is the story of Captain Scott’s RRS Discovery, which set sail from Dundee in 1901. We’ll explore its historic journey to Antarctica with Scott, its return, and its current resting place at Discovery Point.

Your guide, who has volunteered on the RRS Discovery for many years, frequently addresses the common question of whether this is the authentic ship—and indeed, it is! The tour covers a flat route of approximately 3/4 of a mile (1208 meters). Please note that tours will proceed regardless of weather conditions. As we are located near the Tay estuary, which opens to the North Sea, dressing appropriately is essential. Interestingly, Dundee holds the title of Scotland’s sunniest city—believe it or not!

Be aware that the cost of your tour ticket does not include admission to any of the sites we will see or talk about during the walk. We strongly encourage you to explore these attractions on your own time. Tickets for the tour are available exclusively online, and unfortunately, refunds are not available after purchase.

THE TOUR WILL ADHERE TO THE LATEST SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT COVID GUIDELINES, WHICH MAY BE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.
This is a Paid Event.
