Antarctica stands alone as the only continent on Earth without a native human population. Yet, since the earliest explorations, humans have been inspired to create art in response to its stark beauty. Join us for a talk that explores a range of artistic expressions tied to this frozen land, from etched whale teeth and detailed scientific sketches to festive holiday ornaments.
Henrietta Hammant, a museum anthropologist and expert on polar regions, will lead the discussion. Having lived and worked in some of the planet’s most frigid locations—from the Polar Bear Capital of the World in northern Canada to the Antarctic Peninsula—she brings a unique perspective. Her work focuses on how museums and physical artifacts reveal the long-standing human connection to polar environments spanning millennia.
