Sue Lawrence Whispers in the Glen

Come along on Thursday, June 5th at 7pm to hear Sue Lawrence in conversation with Flora Johnston about her poignant story of sisterhood, sorrow, and strength among Scottish women during World War II in her novel, *Whispers in the Glen*. Set in Clova, Scotland, in 1942, amidst the chaos of the Second World War, the narrative follows sisters Nell and Effie Anderson, who share a home in the Old Schoolhouse. Effie serves as a teacher, while Nell is a postwoman, often bearing heartbreaking news from the warfront to the local community. Despite their deep bond, hidden strains and unresolved mysteries create a rift between them. The plot thickens when a military plane with Canadian and British soldiers crashes near their village, and the lone survivor arrives at their doorstep with a photograph that triggers a series of events, risking the exposure of long-buried family secrets.

Spanning two timelines—Effie and Nell’s adulthood during WWII and their youth during WWI—*Whispers in the Glen* explores themes of deception, hidden truths, and the perils of secrecy.
