Sports First Aid
This training is offered at no cost to active volunteers from Perth & Kinross clubs or schools. **Subjects Covered**
– The responsibilities of a first aider
– Legal obligations of a first aider, including duty of care, standards of care, and specific roles, particularly when dealing with children
– Providing first aid during sports events
– Setting up and maintaining a first aid room and equipment
– Assessing incidents, including how to call for assistance and ensuring personal safety
– Basic life support techniques (aligned with the most recent European Resuscitation Council guidelines), incorporating AED usage, along with practical training and assessment
– Handling an unconscious individual, including practical exercises and evaluation
– Placing someone in the recovery position, with hands-on practice and testing
– Responding to vomiting, choking, and suspected heart attacks
– Managing head injuries, including facial trauma, with practical components and assessment; ongoing informal evaluation is suitable and practical but does not replace the formal end-of-course test as outlined in the criteria
– Detailed guidance on concussion management, following the latest evidence-based Scottish guidelines
– Addressing spinal injuries, with practical training and assessment, focusing on immobilization on the field until emergency services arrive
– Treating limb injuries, such as soft tissue damage and suspected fractures, with practical sessions and testing
– Controlling bleeding and managing shock
– Caring for wounds and burns
– Handling medical conditions in sports, such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, angina/heart attacks, strokes, and environmental issues like heat and cold exposure.
