RRS Discoverys role in Polar exploration history

Date: June 6th at 5 PM
Ticket Price: £10-£30
Join us for a captivating event featuring the RRS Discovery, one of just two ships highlighted as significant ‘objects’ in Anne Strathie’s upcoming book, *A History of Polar Exploration in 50 Objects: from Cook’s Circumnavigations to the Aviation Age* (set for release in November 2024). During this talk, Anne will discuss why the Dundee-constructed Discovery was an obvious inclusion in her work and explore its diverse contributions to polar exploration, scientific research, and even the Scouting movement. Whether you’ve already delved into Anne’s latest publication or not, expect to uncover some unexpected insights! The session will also feature a Q&A segment and a book-signing opportunity for attendees with book-inclusive tickets.

**About the Speaker:**
Anne Strathie, originally from Scotland, developed a deep fascination with polar exploration history after relocating to Cheltenham, the birthplace of Dr. Edward Wilson, a prominent figure in Scott’s Discovery and Terra Nova expeditions. Transitioning from a career in business and arts and heritage fundraising, Anne embarked on full-time research and writing in 2010. *A History of Polar Exploration in 50 Objects* marks her fourth book, following her earlier works on Terra Nova expedition figures Henry ‘Birdie’ Bowers and Herbert Ponting, as well as *From Ice-Floes to Battlefields: Scott’s ‘Antarctics’ in the First World War*. Her extensive research has led her across Britain, to both polar regions, and to countries including Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. Anne frequently speaks at events and delivers presentations both in the UK and internationally.

**Acclaim for *A History of Polar Exploration in 50 Objects*:**
‘The intricate web of scientific, artistic, and personal connections that tie together the exploration of the Arctic and Antarctic is often overlooked. Dive into this book to rediscover polar adventures through the lens of its featured objects – prepare to be amazed!’ – Dr. David Wilson, great-nephew of Dr. Edward Wilson and author/co-author of titles such as *Cheltenham in Antarctica*, *Discovery Illustrated*, *Nimrod Illustrated*, *The Lost Photographs of Captain Scott*, and *Edward Wilson’s Antarctic Notebooks*.
