Preston Mill Quiet Days
Certain individuals may feel anxious or unsettled by the sound of loud equipment. On designated quiet days, we provide a calmer experience by halting the mill’s machinery, ensuring that all visitors can appreciate and explore our unique site in peace. Preston Mill is under the care of the National Trust for Scotland and stands as one of Scotland’s most ancient mills. It gained fame as a filming spot for the TV series Outlander and was actively producing oatmeal for commercial purposes until 1959, making it the final operational watermill in the Lothians. Additionally, there’s a scenic trail leading to the nearby Phantassie Doocot.
We offer a small parking area right next to the mill and are conveniently located near bus and train services. A designated parking spot for disabled visitors is available close to the site. Our visitor center, including the shop, exhibition space, and restrooms, is fully accessible, with a baby changing facility provided in the restroom. Leashed dogs are permitted on the grounds and in the exhibition area, though they are not allowed inside the mill.
Our guided tours offer a glimpse into the daily life of a miller and the operations of the mill, demonstrating how water-driven mechanisms were used to process oats that sustained the local community. The tour also highlights the evolution of early industrial technology and the use of water as an energy source.
Please ensure you arrive on time for the tours, as they begin promptly. Upon arrival, head to the visitor center to register. While tickets can be bought on the day of your visit, availability is not guaranteed, so we recommend booking ahead to secure your spot.
Due to the historic structure of the mill, the tours may not be accessible to all. The interior includes stairs and uneven flooring, and the path to the doocot features steps over the River Tyne bridge. If you have any concerns, please consult with a staff member, and we’ll make every effort to accommodate your needs.
