Portrait in Wax The Anatomical Models of Anna Morandi Manzolini
Come along to our concise lunchtime presentation delving into the history of medicine. For those embarking on ‘The Grand Tour’ of Europe during the mid-1700s, a notable highlight was a visit to ‘The Lady Anatomist’. Anna Morandi Manzolini crafted exquisite wax anatomical models and educated students in the field of anatomy. She initially collaborated with her husband, but after his passing, she continued her anatomical studies independently. She reportedly dissected more than 1,000 bodies in her dedication to her craft, earning acclaim throughout Europe, from London’s Royal Society to Catherine the Great in Russia. This lecture, delivered by human remains conservator Cat Irving, will explore the life and professional journey of Anna Morandi Manzolini as a pioneering female anatomist in the eighteenth century.
