Pibroch masterclass with Allan Macdonald
PIBROCH WORKSHOP FEATURING ALLAN MACDONALD
Allan MacDonald, a prominent figure in the Gaelic music community, is celebrated worldwide as a composer, musical director, piper, vocalist, workshop facilitator, and speaker on Gaelic traditions. We are thrilled to have him host this exclusive workshop.
During the session, Allan will explore the connections between pibroch, the traditional Gaelic court music, and Gaelic vocal traditions. He will trace pibroch’s roots as a practical, orally transmitted form of music and explain its transformation into a sophisticated ‘art music’ genre, which has somewhat confined it to a narrow competitive platform. With extensive experience as a performer, composer, and scholar (including an MLitt dissertation on this topic), Allan also holds numerous prestigious piping accolades.
The workshop will include live demonstrations and foster an informal setting for attendees to engage with questions. While primarily a non-participatory event, Allan might encourage everyone to join in some singing.
