Moonlight Concerts warmly welcomes you to witness the celebrated concert pianist Matthew Shiel as he commands the stage with Rachmaninoff’s awe-inspiring and incredibly challenging Piano Concerto No. 2—an experience that frequently leaves audiences in stunned silence!
Rachmaninoff’s cherished Piano Concerto No. 2 is a profound journey for both piano and orchestra, delving into the depths of Rachmaninoff’s inner psyche. The piece was born out of an extraordinary circumstance, inspired by Dr. Nikolai Dahl, who innovatively alleviated Rachmaninoff’s depression through hypnosis, encouraging him to create this concerto. It stands as perhaps the only classical masterpiece dedicated to a therapist.
A breathtaking display of pianistic brilliance, this concerto later captured the imagination of Hollywood filmmakers, appearing in iconic films such as *Brief Encounter* (1945) and *The Seven Year Itch* (1955), featuring Marilyn Monroe.
Experience an indelible night of exceptional piano mastery and heartfelt narrative with Matthew at St Vincent’s Chapel. Built in 1857, this chapel is among Scotland’s most splendid architectural treasures.
Please note, this is a ticketed event.
