Learn to Dance the Blues

Thistle Blues Dancing is thrilled to host an afternoon session dedicated to blues dancing. This form of social dance is performed to blues music and related genres such as jazz, funk, and soul. Whether you’re a complete novice to blues (or partner dancing altogether!) or a seasoned dancer looking to enhance your musicality, movement finesse, and understanding of blues aesthetics, this workshop is ideal for you. During this session, our focus will be on a particular blues dance known as the Savoy Walk. Originating from the iconic Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, NY, during the jazz era, the Savoy Walk is a Ballroomin’ blues dance. The ballroom’s big bands were renowned for their lively, swinging jazz tunes that fueled popular dance crazes like the Lindy Hop and Charleston. However, when the tempo slowed to jazzy blues melodies, dancers often turned to the Savoy Walk. Drawing inspiration from the elegant moves of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and incorporating elements of the Fox Trot while adding flashy Lindy Hop flair, it’s a captivating dance to observe. It has significantly shaped the freestyle Ballroomin’ blues seen at blues dance festivals across Europe. *IN CLASS* – You don’t need to bring a partner; everyone will have the chance to dance with others, switching between lead and follow roles. Dress in comfortable attire and footwear. Blues dancing frequently involves a close embrace, akin to a hug, as the primary form of partner connection. We place a strong emphasis on consent, ensuring the workshop equips you with the tools to communicate effectively and dance comfortably with your partners.
