Isle of May Puffin Wildlife Photography Workshop
Come along for a unique puffin experience! The Isle of May, a breathtaking island just 5 miles from the Fife shoreline, serves as a vital National Nature Reserve managed by NatureScot (SNH). Open to the public from early April through late September, this serene island offers awe-inspiring scenery at every turn.
During the visiting season, NatureScot (SNH) deploys rangers to the Isle of May to enhance our experience with their knowledge. They welcome visitors at the dock, provide a brief update on the current state of the local wildlife, and keep watch over the island during our stay. The Isle of May hosts an astonishing variety of fauna, with as many as 200,000 seabirds nesting there, including up to 100,000 Puffins. It also supports significant populations of Guillemots, Razorbills, Kittiwakes, and Shags (the prime time to see Puffins is from April to July). Additionally, around 300 seals reside on the island year-round, and with a bit of luck on the right day, you might spot Porpoises, Dolphins, or even a whale.
Our time on the island will vary with the tides, typically lasting between 2 to 3 hours. We’ll focus on photographing the striking and beloved puffins, aiming to capture specific images, particularly of puffins holding sand eels and fish in their beaks, as part of a predetermined shot list during our brief visit.
As with all my workshops, I’ll be available to offer guidance on camera settings and various photographic techniques. The group size is limited to 4 participants, ensuring personalized attention and the chance for one-on-one assistance if needed.
The cost for the day is £125 per person, which covers the boat trip to the island. During our session, we will explore topics such as:
– Basic Camera Configuration
– Mastering Exposure
– Adjusting Exposure Compensation
– Understanding Focus Modes
– Setting White Balance
– Crafting Composition
– Taking Portrait Shots
– Capturing Behavioral Moments
The fee includes the boat journey to and from the island. Note that this event requires payment.
