History of the National Library of Scotland
In 2025, the National Library of Scotland celebrates its 100th anniversary in its present form—a vital public institution dedicated to safeguarding the literary legacy of a country. Yet, the Library’s origins trace back far beyond 1925. Join Robbie and Ralph as they navigate through five centuries of transformation, sharing tales of books, manuscripts, individuals, and concepts. **About the Speakers**
Robbie Mitchell serves on the Reference Service team at the National Library of Scotland. Beyond assisting in the Library’s Reading Rooms and handling remote inquiries, Robbie leads tours of the iconic George IV Bridge building. He plays a key role in organizing the Library’s annual Doors Open Day in September and has contributed articles on the Library’s history to its official website.
Ralph McLean holds the position of Manuscripts Curator for the Long 18th Century Collections at the National Library of Scotland. He oversees significant collections, including those related to Robert Burns and the Jacobites, which are currently showcased in the Treasures Gallery. Together with Heidi Egginton, he curates the Gallery exhibit on the Library’s founding.
