Every year, Palestinian Prisoner’s Day is observed on April 17th, and the plight of those held in Israel’s detention centers has reached a critical point. Reports of systemic physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, alongside an increasing number of deaths in custody, including that of a child, highlight the urgency of the situation.

This year, Scottish PSC is proud to present the documentary ‘First Picture’ (2006), directed by Akram Al-Ashqar, a PhD candidate in film studies at the University of Glasgow. The screenings will take place at multiple locations throughout Scotland, and Akram will be present for post-film Q&A sessions.

‘First Picture’ (2006) narrates the heartbreaking story of a Palestinian child born inside an Israeli prison under occupation. After almost three years, he is released without his mother and returns to his family and his mother’s formerly imprisoned companions in the Tulkarm Refugee Camp. The film traces his journey of reconnection and adaptation.

Currently, there are 9,500 political prisoners, including 350 children, detained in these facilities. Among them was Walid Ahmad, a 17-year-old who tragically lost his life in March this year after six months of detention without charges. As per the occupying forces’ policy, his family has been denied access to his body.

Come join us to engage in discussions about the documentary, the dire circumstances faced by Palestinian prisoners, and how we in Scotland can actively show solidarity and support.

This is a ticketed event with an entry fee – contributions are appreciated!
