Exhibition Launch of Hooked 500 Years of Addiction
Join us for a special occasion marking the debut of our latest exhibition, ‘Hooked: 500 Years of Addiction’. The evening will kick off with a welcome gathering in our lobby. Following this, you’ll have the chance to listen to insightful talks by two experts, Prof Phil Withington and Prof Gerda Reith. Phil will delve into the historical aspects of addiction, while Gerda will explore modern-day behavioral dependencies. Hosting the event is Dr Michael Blackmore, a general practitioner, Chair of RCGP West Scotland Faculty, and someone who has personally overcome addiction. After the talks, the reception will resume, allowing guests to explore our newly opened exhibition.
**About the Exhibition**
From narcotics to betting, and from spirits to romance, HOOKED examines the evolution of addiction through the ages. It challenges you to rethink the common prejudices surrounding addiction and recognize our shared susceptibility to it.
The display sheds light on various forms of dependency through items like pills, alcohol, snuff, and tobacco, revealing the diverse nature of addiction and the numerous efforts to address it. It also uncovers the troubling roots of substance dependency in the Western world, deeply tied to colonialism and enslavement.
With a collection of rare manuscripts, historical artifacts, art pieces, personal stories, and interactive digital content, the exhibition probes the essence of addiction, its origins, and the societal stigma faced by those affected.
Please note that this is a ticketed event.
