Edinburgh 900 Unburying the History in Greyfriars Kirkyard
Greyfriars Kirkyard serves as a testament to the significant changes and historical moments that have defined Edinburgh through the ages. Within its grounds, traces of the pre-Reformation era, the city’s defenses, the Reformation, urban expansion, and times of wealth, disease, societal shifts, and conflict are still evident. By exploring the Kirkyard, its monuments, and the individuals laid to rest here, one can sense the profound effects these historical events had on both the living and the deceased in Edinburgh. This occasion will be a 90-minute guided walk. Kindly gather at the brown ‘Greyfriars’ sign located just beyond the Candlemaker Row entrance, near Greyfriars Bobby’s Bar. Be aware that the Kirkyard features uneven ground and steps, which might pose challenges for those with mobility difficulties or individuals with strollers. Dogs are permitted if they are well-mannered and kept on a leash. Please be informed that there are no restroom facilities within Greyfriars Kirkyard; the closest ones are available at the National Museum of Scotland, situated across the road.
