Craig A Smith inconversation with Doug Johnstone
Come along on Friday, May 2nd at 7pm to hear Craig A. Smith in conversation with Doug Johnstone about his sweeping novel, The River, which explores themes of mortality and renewal across a lifetime. There’s a well-known Scottish proverb often quoted by grandmothers: “What’s meant for you won’t pass you by.” Lachlan McCormack seems to embody this belief, drifting through life like a piece of flotsam, yet ultimately arriving at his destined place—where the river flows into the sea. This novel is a heartfelt tribute to both his first love and his homeland, Scotland, tracing Lachlan’s path through seventy years of the country’s political, sporting, and cultural milestones (and setbacks). Throughout his journey, it seems that only the force of death can push him forward, with the story reflecting on the seven pivotal deaths that have defined his life and charted his course. The narrative delves into the recurring cycles of life, love, joy, and Scotland’s persistent quest for identity on the global stage.
