Moonlight Concerts warmly welcomes you to witness the talent of Matthew Shiel, a celebrated emerging artist from Usher Hall and Live Music Now, and recipient of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Johann Sebastian Bach Prize. He will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations, the top-voted harpsichord composition on Classic FM as chosen by the public.

Many are unaware that Bach originally wrote the Goldberg Variations for the harpsichord, as the piano was not widely used during his era. We extend our gratitude to St Cecelia’s Hall and its Musical Instrument Museum for providing access to their remarkable collection of historical instruments, including a concert hall organ and harpsichord. These treasures will immerse you in an authentic auditory journey, evoking the soundscape of three centuries past for a truly memorable experience.

The Goldberg Variations consist of 30 distinct reinterpretations of a beautiful theme. Over the course of a reflective hour, the music evolves through a spectrum of tempos, textures, and harmonies. When the original aria returns, it carries a renewed and impactful essence. Having heard the theme transformed in myriad ways, the return to its pure form becomes a deeply moving and almost transcendent moment.
