Bone Detectives The Role of Forensic Anthropology in Solving Police Cases

Dr. Mann will explore the critical role of forensic anthropologists, commonly referred to as “Bone Detectives,” in aiding law enforcement to crack cases globally. He will delve into the specific tools, methods, and approaches used to locate, retrieve, and identify missing individuals and skeletal remains. Additionally, he will recount significant cases from his extensive 45-year career, including his work on the first victim of the notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

Dr. Robert Mann is a distinguished forensic anthropologist and a faculty member at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii. With over 15,000 human skeletons examined from various global institutions, his expertise is unparalleled. He is among the elite group of 110 anthropologists certified as a Diplomate by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology and holds the distinction of being the first anthropologist honored as a Fellow by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia in its 200-year legacy. Recently, he was awarded the Sood Sangvichien Gold Medal by Siriraj Hospital in Thailand for his contributions to forensic science. His research interests include anatomy, bone pathology, trauma, skeletal irregularities, deformities, and typical variations in human skeletal structures.

Dr. Mann has been instrumental in the identification and recovery efforts during major catastrophes such as the 9/11 attacks, the Asian tsunami, numerous commercial and military aircraft and helicopter accidents, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, cases involving three serial killers, and American soldiers from the War of 1812 and the Civil War. He has published over 120 scientific articles and 10 books, and has appeared in several news features and TV documentaries on forensic anthropology.
