Barney Campbell The Fires of Gallipoli

Come along to hear Barney Campbell speak on Tuesday, April 15th at 7pm about his poignant depiction of camaraderie born amidst the horrors of war in his novel, *The Fires of Gallipoli*. Follow the journey of Edward Salter, a timid and introspective lawyer whose world is upended by the onset of World War I in 1914. As he heads to the brutal battlefields of Gallipoli, he forms a deep bond with the charismatic and subtly brave Theodore Thorne. Together, they endure the relentless brutality of war, their spirits laid bare in the infernal landscape, clinging to each other and the rare moments of peace they share.

Theodore becomes Edward’s pillar of strength during the relentless combat. When a much-needed break from the front lines aligns for both, Theo welcomes Edward to his family’s serene countryside home in Northamptonshire. It is there that Edward encounters Theo’s sister, Miranda, and finds himself captivated by her charm.

Edward eventually leaves the sweltering, grim slaughter of Gallipoli to serve under Lord Kitchener, later moving to the Western Front and engaging in espionage in post-war Constantinople. However, a strange distance grows between Edward and Theo. Will their bond withstand the war’s aftermath when devastation and betrayal surround them?

*The Fires of Gallipoli* offers a moving and expansive exploration of friendship and its vulnerability in the face of humanity’s darkest moments.
