An evening with John D O Fulton Slavery and the Scottish Enlightenment
**Slavery and the Scottish Enlightenment by John D O Fulton**
The intellectual and ethical currents that arose in Scotland from the mid-18th to mid-19th century were deeply influenced by the ethical challenges of the era. Consequently, the narrative of the Scottish Enlightenment is inseparably linked with the history of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade.
In his work, *”Slavery and the Scottish Enlightenment”*, John D O Fulton WS delves into this complex and often contradictory connection through the captivating biographies of a remarkable array of figures—ranging from Jamaican plantation proprietors to the first American private detective, merchants from Glasgow to radical thinkers in London, runaway slaves from America to fearless women advocating for the moral essence of the United States. These individuals lived through a transformative era marked by profound historical upheavals, legal changes, and ethical debates, with slavery as a central issue. Viewed through a Scottish lens, *”Slavery and the Scottish Enlightenment”* offers a vivid, multifaceted, and gripping portrayal of this pivotal time, while reflecting on its significance for contemporary society.
This event will take place in the Reading Room at the Advocates Library, Parliament House, Edinburgh, to support the Tumbling Lassie campaign. This initiative seeks to increase awareness and funding for organizations combating modern slavery and human trafficking, as well as providing assistance to survivors in Scotland and further afield.
Doors will open at 5:30 PM, with the presentation starting at 6:00 PM, followed by refreshments and light bites from approximately 7:00 PM.
