A Tale of Two Henrys the Story of Grays Anatomy
Come along to our concise lunchtime presentation delving into the history of medicine. College Librarian Steven Kerr will discuss the beginnings and enduring impact of the most renowned medical textbook ever published, “Anatomy: Descriptive and Surgical,” created in 1858 by anatomists Henry Gray and Henry Vandyke Carter. The session will cover the strained partnership between the book’s authors, the contentious reactions it faced upon release, and how it ultimately gained worldwide recognition as “Gray’s Anatomy.” Following the presentation, participants can explore the RCSEd Library to see the exclusive pre-publication drafts of ‘Gray’s Anatomy,’ complete with Henry Gray’s handwritten annotations, alongside a scarce first edition of the text.
