There are few summer experiences in Scotland that combine world-class music, stunning coastal scenery, and intimate venues quite like the East Neuk Festival.
Returning from 1-5 July 2026, the festival celebrates its 21st year with a programme that brings together internationally acclaimed performers, emerging talent, and audiences from across Scotland and beyond.
And for visitors staying in Dundee, it’s closer than you might think.
Just a short journey across the Tay Bridge, the picturesque fishing villages and coastal communities of the East Neuk provide a spectacular setting for one of Scotland’s most respected cultural events.
A Festival Unlike Any Other
What makes the East Neuk Festival special isn’t simply the quality of the music.
It’s the setting.
Concerts take place in churches, village halls, historic buildings, and unique spaces throughout Crail, Cellardyke, Kilrenny, Anstruther, St Monans, and beyond. Audiences can spend the morning exploring coastal paths, enjoying local cafés and seafood restaurants, before settling into an afternoon or evening performance by some of the world’s finest musicians.
It’s a world away from the large-scale festival experience.
Everything feels personal.
Everything feels close.
And somehow the music feels all the more powerful because of it.
A Fitting Tribute to a Scottish Musical Giant
This year’s festival will also include a special tribute to the late Professor John Wallace, one of Scotland’s most influential musical figures and a proud son of Fife.
Wallace, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 76, played a major role in the musical life of the region and was a passionate advocate for community music and young performers.
A special performance of Stockhausen’s Donnerstags-Abschied (Thursday-Farewell) will honour his legacy, performed by an ensemble led by celebrated trumpeter Marco Blaauw, a close friend and colleague.
Weather permitting, an outdoor sunset performance on Saturday 4 July will be open to the public, creating what promises to be one of the festival’s most memorable moments.
Highlights Across Five Days
As always, the programme spans a remarkable range of musical styles.
Festival-goers can look forward to performances from:
- Fergus McCreadie, one of Scotland’s most celebrated jazz pianists
- The Tallis Scholars, internationally renowned for their performances of Renaissance sacred music
- The Scottish Chamber Orchestra
- Christian Zacharias
- The Calidore Quartet
- Cuarteto Quiroga
- Opus13
The festival will also feature three UK premieres, including new works from acclaimed composers Mark Anthony Turnage, Britta Byström, and Syrian oud virtuoso Rihab Azar.
One particularly intriguing highlight comes on Saturday 4 July with Razumovsky Day, offering audiences the rare opportunity to hear all three of Beethoven’s legendary Razumovsky Quartets performed across a single day.
For classical music enthusiasts, opportunities like this are exceptionally rare.
Why Dundee Makes the Perfect Base
For visitors travelling from elsewhere in Scotland or overseas, Dundee offers an ideal base for exploring both the city and the East Neuk Festival.
The city combines excellent transport connections, a growing range of hotels, independent restaurants, waterfront attractions, and cultural landmarks including V&A Dundee, RRS Discovery, and The McManus.
By day, visitors can explore Dundee’s vibrant waterfront and city centre.
By afternoon and evening, they can head across to the East Neuk and experience one of Scotland’s finest music festivals before returning to the city.
It’s a combination that offers the best of both worlds: urban culture and coastal charm within easy reach of one another.
Music, Coastline and Summer Memories
The East Neuk has always had a special magic about it.
Colourful harbours, fishing villages, sea views, fresh local food, and a slower pace of life make it one of Scotland’s most attractive destinations during the summer months.
Add a world-class music festival into the mix and it’s easy to understand why audiences return year after year.
Whether you’re a dedicated classical music lover or simply looking for a memorable summer day out, East Neuk Festival offers something genuinely special.
And with Dundee just across the water, there’s never been a better excuse to make a weekend of it.
