Montrose Golf Links features two classic links courses on Scotland’s east coast. Golf has been played here for over 460 years, and the current setup includes the historic 1562 Course and the shorter Broomfield Course. The Royal Montrose Mercantile Golf Club provides membership, clubhouse facilities and competitions.
The 1562 Course is a traditional 18-hole links playing 6,585 yards, par 71. It’s a demanding coastal test with undulating fairways, gorse, pot bunkers and sea winds. The Broomfield Course is a tighter, 4,771-yard par 67 links layout that prioritises accuracy over distance, offering a different kind of challenge. Together, they provide variety and authenticity for golfers of all levels.

Broomfield Course

Highlights
1562 Course:
Hole 3 “Table” – 136-yard par 3 with narrow, raised green
Hole 5 “Hillock” – Risk-reward par 4, reachable in one
Hole 9 “Jubilee” – Stroke index 1, tight driving line, long second
Broomfield Course:
Short, precision-focused layout with a mix of par-3s and par-4s
Featured Hole
1562 – 3rd “Table”: Par 3 over a gully to a raised, narrow green. Highly exposed to wind, with punishing drop-offs on all sides. A standout moment on the course.
Design
Courses evolved naturally over time. The 1562 Course was refined by Willie Park Jr., while the Broomfield Course retains traditional links elements in a shorter form. Routing uses the coastline to full effect.
Conditions
Courses play firm and fast year-round. Coastal winds shape the experience. Greens are quick in summer. Erosion is actively managed.
