HMS Unicorn. Dundee’s Historic Warship & Maritime Museum

HMS Unicorn is one of Dundee’s most remarkable and unique visitor attractions — a fully preserved 19th-century Royal Navy warship permanently docked at Victoria Dock. Built in 1824, it is the oldest ship in Scotland and one of the oldest ships in the world still afloat, offering visitors a rare opportunity to step aboard a vessel from the age of sail.

Now operating as a museum ship, HMS Unicorn tells the story of naval life, Dundee’s maritime heritage, and nearly 200 years of history all experienced directly on board.

Launched in 1824, HMS Unicorn was built for the Royal Navy during a transitional period in shipbuilding. Unlike many ships of its era, it was never fully rigged for sea combat, which helped preserve much of its original structure.

Over its lifetime, the ship has:

  • Served as a naval training vessel in Dundee
  • Acted as a base during both World Wars
  • Supported the Royal Naval Reserve and Women’s Royal Naval Service
  • Survived intact while many similar ships were lost

Today, it is considered one of the most original historic ships in existence, with much of its structure dating back to its construction.

A visit to HMS Unicorn is a fully immersive experience, allowing you to explore multiple decks of the ship.

Visitors can:

  • Walk through four historic decks of the ship
  • Explore crew quarters, officer spaces, and working areas
  • See naval equipment, artefacts, and historical displays
  • Learn about life at sea in the 19th century
  • Try hands-on elements like knot tying and hammock setups

The experience is self-guided, with optional insights from knowledgeable staff and volunteers.

HMS Unicorn plays a key role in telling Dundee’s wider story as a maritime city.

The ship connects directly to:

  • Dundee’s shipbuilding and naval history
  • Its role in global exploration and trade
  • The city’s military significance during wartime
  • The wider waterfront regeneration seen today

It complements nearby attractions like Discovery Point and the RRS Discovery, helping to form a strong maritime heritage cluster on the Dundee waterfront.
